MagiTek : Declassified

A millenium ended, high school was over. For years the earth plane incarnations of Quartz Relic and Thugmasta J had shared their enjoyment and passion for many things. Gaming, music, and the ever shifting subcultures were of heavy inspiration to them. As the rest of the world entered the year 2000 with barely any of the highly expected disasters or changes, these two individuals did transform...through a strange phenomenon.

It's unclear what truly instigated this change. Transmissions in the ether seem to indicate it was the mythical "Galactic Automatic" that paved the way for them to start infuencing space and time, perhaps even ultimately altering it. Other data indicates that they just disovered the easy build and playability of audio editing software. This would seem to be the next step after their previous noise/garage sound from earlier years (in the all star bands DV8 and Lunatic Pandora).

Anyway you look at it, there is evidence of this change. The aptly named album "Power Undefined" was the first outburst of random creativity from these two self prolcaimed "magic-technicians" (hence the name of the duo, "MagiTek"). Content ranged from amateur trance/house, to the assasination of Dracula (by Nemesis of Umbrella), to swiss cheese attempts at rapping. Somewhere in there perhaps one could see a sparkle of talent and things to come. These recordings are sealed away due to the possible contamination of order. Access may be possible in the future for those with a decent understanding or appreciation of chaos.

This particular kind of enlightening drove Quartz and J to further pursue a more comprehensible form of what had first inspired them. Their efforts resulted in a more direct concept and better production with the 2nd album "Galactic Automatic". Content ranged from intergalactic space battles, to robotic dances of destruction, to samplicious storytime, to finally meatier (less cheesier) raps. The experience up to this point left MagiTek spent, and subsequently the final execution and arrival of Galactic Automatic aimed high...but fell unrecognized into the year 2002.

An Intermission

A short time later these boys went on a quest seeking to recover any lost musical relics up to this point. In some cases fragments or splinters were all that was left; in others near complete artifact restoration took place. The end result of this brief trip down memory lane was chronicled as an album titled "Overflow" (a collection of rare, unfinished, old, and scrapped tracks). Raw and severely spontaneous in nature as well as quality, perhaps persuing it wasn't of great necessity...but Quartz and J would never had felt right with these tracks remaining incomplete and unknown.

Then quite a long gap in signfigant MagiTek history began. A bit of material was already in the works for a new album, but conflicting schedules and lack of outside interest kept progress slow. At one point the 2 became 3 as a friend and earlier collaborator stepped into the fold. His influenced vision of the M-Tek was from another dimension (one of MagiTek as a new wave cover/rip-off band). "Shadow Galactica" was the name he went by, and he deserves thanks for some of the M-Tek revival circa 2003. It wasn't meant to be though. When the dust settled, it was Quartz and J alone manipulating the gears of time, rhythms and rhymes. Gaining more experience every day, they trudged forward.

Distorting Reality

For the better part of an earth calendar year, Thugmasta J furthered his various studies through an extended solo mission. During this time Quartz continued to slowly give form to what would be the next MagiTek release. When J did return, though, work on this was not of immediate concern to either of them. Many a facet of day to day life took up much of their spirit. There also seemed to be a lack of time, which our duo always used to have plenty of.

This was not a lull though. Progress was made bit by bit...and they knew it would be worth it. Sensing that this might be the last chance to share with others the phenomenon tha t had brought MagiTek into being, they were glad to take the time needed to give it their best. Many a friend of Quartz and J's were brought directly into the research and production sessions to further broaden interpretation and perspective. Much of this was completed and done throughout mid 2004 to mid 2005, with Quartz spending an addtional year afterwards compiling and processing the essential data.

The new album was set to represent what MagiTek was ultimately about, beyond the random craziness and sci-fi tales within. The magitechnicians were always concerned with perception, and how it affects our collective or individual reality. If they couldn't truly escape this dull, confining world, perhaps seeking to bring elements from another was the ideal route. After numerous obstacles, delays, and conflicts with other time lords, Thugmasta J and Quartz Relic finally delivered their best material to date, with a truly fitting title for the MagiTek magnum opus..."Distorting Reality For Better Perception". It was made available July 2006.

...more MagiTek history is now in the making...
